Helicopter purchase is expected to bring Saab business worth 2 billion SEK.

The choice of the NH90 helicopter entails direct involvement by Saab worth in the region of 2 billion SEK. The work entails both development and production for Saab in collaboration with NHIndustries/Eurocopter.

The decision to order NH90 helicopters means Saab will be responsible for developing and acquiring the tactical system for the new Swedish multi-role helicopter, Helicopter 14. A new management system will be developed as part of the tactical avionics system. This will be an important part of the Swedish Armed Forces’ future structure and management philosophy.

"By using the systems engineering skills from the JAS 39 Gripen together with the competence in control, countermeasures and maintenance introduced to the Group through the purchase of Celsius, Saab can now undertake total responsibility for the tactical system in the Defence Forces’ new medium-weight helicopters," states Bengt Halse, President and CEO.

Saab will also produce 200 forebodies for the NH90. This is equivalent to around two-thirds of the total number of helicopters ordered to date for Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and now also for Sweden, Norway and Finland.

The deal creates the right conditions for Saab to expand its cooperation with major defense players such as EADS, Eurocopter and Agusta. Developing and supplying the tactical system will also enable Saab to actively cultivate the export market in a new product area for the company. Several countries are planning helicopter procurements with the accompanying tactical systems.

Development and production will take place in Sweden at Saab Aerospace in Linköping, SaabTech Systems in Järfälla, Saab Avionics in Jönköping and Kista, and AerotechTelub in Arboga.

Saab is one of the world’s leading high-technology companies, with its main operations focusing on defence, aviation and space. The group covers a broad spectrum of competence and capability in systems integration.
