Linköping University and Saab establish research center

On Monday 3 May Saab and Linköping University signed a Letter of Intent to establish a joint center of excellence called LinkLab. The aim of the joint venture is to consolidate and expand common research and technical development in the field of aircraft systems, with focus on advanced systems and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV:s).

This latest venture is a means of further strengthening and coordinating the collaboration projects currently being conducted by Saab and Linköping University. With LinkLab, the parties aim to create a renowned and respected center of excellence for research and technological development in the field of aviation.

"This extended cooperation creates new conditions for industrial growth in aerospace in Sweden. LinkLab also enables synergies with other business sectors," says Mille Millnert, Dean of Linköping University.

The unique aspects of LinkLab are to be found in the composition of the project teams, which bring together industrial and scientific interests. Research will be conducted into areas such as autonomous systems, decision support, signature management, system architecture, man-machine interaction, aircraft construction and production engineering.

"The cooperation between Saab and Linköping University aims to make Sweden a leading European country in aerospace technology," says Lennart Sindahl, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Saab Aerosystems in Linköping.

The signing of the Letter of Intent means that Saab and Linköping University can now progress into an establishment phase defining the working parameters for LinkLab. In early September the parties will sign the agreement that will effectively launch LinkLab, which will be located on Campus Valla in Linköping. A number of projects already in progress, as well as others about to start, will form the basis of LinkLab. The partnership will also build a better foundation for new, extended projects, as well as increased mobility for personnel between the two organizations.
