Saab Ericsson Space gets order for Galaxy 17 telecom satellite

Saab Ericsson Space AB in Gothenburg, Sweden, has received an order for a Command and Data handling system intended for the Galaxy 17 satellite built by Alcatel Space in Cannes, France.

We have been supporting every delivery of their Spacebus 3000 series of satellites with our reliable Command and Data Handling Systems”, says Bengt Mörtberg, president and CEO of Saab Ericsson Space. “We are happy to be able to contribute to the continued strong market demand for Alcatel´s telecom satellites”.

This order is for a slightly modified version of the system now produced for Alcatel since many years. Some new and enhanced security features will be added.

Command and Data Handling Systems represent one of Saab Ericsson Space strongest product niches. In total, the company has delivered more than 70 systems, to both commercial and institutional programs. Of these systems, more than 40 have been delivered for use on Spacebus platforms. Saab Ericsson Space also supplies systems to Alcatel´s medium-size platform Proteus, a scientific platform first used for the TOPEX-Poseidon/Jason 1 radar altimeter mission, a cooperation effort between NASA and CNES.

Galaxy 17 is the latest acquisition of new satellite capacity by the well-known operator PanAmSat. Galaxy 17 will be the very first European-built satellite in PanAmSats fleet. The satellite will service North America with television and telephone transmissions, using a payload of 24 Ku-band and 24 C-band transponders. The satellite will have a lift-off mass of 4100 kg and will have solar panel power of 9.5 kW at start of service. The design life is 15 years.
