Co-operation Agreement in the field of Anti-Ship Missiles signed between Saab Bofors Dynamics and the German company DIEHL

Initially the companies will co-operate on the integration and verification phases of the RBS15 Mk3 Anti-Ship Missiles project. The co-operation will also include production, deliveries, maintenance and future upgrades for both the Swedish and German navies, as well as for the export market. Saab Bofors Dynamics will be the system co-ordinator, and DIEHL will be responsible for the final assembly and testing of the missiles.

This co-operation is based on previous successful co-operation with the consortium that is developing and producing the IRIS-T air-to-air missile, where DIEHL is system co-ordinator and Prime Contractor. That co-operation has now been extended to include Anti-Ship Missiles.

Modern naval forces require missile systems that will enable them to combat both naval targets and land targets, which is of particular importance to Rapid Deployment Forces operating in coastal waters. RBS15 Mk3 has been specially designed to solve both these tasks. With a combat range in excess of 200 km, and sufficient space to carry different types of warheads and target seekers, it is very well-suited for such types of combat scenarios.

RBS15 Mk3 is also an alternative weapon system for the new German K 130 Class corvettes, and also for several other classes of new and upgraded vessels in service with the German Navy.

Other business prospects for RBS15 Mk3 are current procurements of naval target missile systems for the Finnish and Polish Navies. At a later point in time the Swedish Visby Class corvettes will also be equipped with the system.

The market potential for the system is calculated as being in excess of MSEK 4000.

This Agreement between Saab and Diehl is the latest example of Swedish-German co-operation in the defence field. Among previous joint efforts between the countries should be mentioned the Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank, the air-to-air missile systems IRIS-T and METEOR, aircraft armament systems such as DWS39 and TAURUS, as well as the Air Defence missile system ASRAD-R.
