UN decision creates business opportunities for Saab TransponderTech
The UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has decided to revise the maritime safety regulations (SOLAS, chapter V). One consequence of this decision is that the Automatic Identification System (AIS) will become compulsory equipment aboard the approximately 56 000 vessels defined within the parameters of the SOLAS regulations.
The new regulations will come into effect as of July 1, 2002. These new regulations will create substantial business opportunities for Saab TransponderTech AB, which is the world leader in AIS technology. Even vessels not subject to SOLAS regulations constitute an interesting additional potential market.
Furthermore, the infrastructure for ports, rivers and coastal areas will have to be upgraded to receive data transmitted from AIS transponders. This data must be efficiently distributed to authorised personnel in a crisis, as during a sea-rescue operation.
